When a product developer at an outdoor apparel brand reviews a fishing shirt spec sheet, the first number they check is often UPF 40+ or UPF 50+. The more useful question is where that number comes from. In standard polyester and nylon woven fabrics, UV protection starts with the fiber itself, and a UV-cut finish only adds to that baseline. The difference between the two approaches explains why one fabric can still pass UPF 50+ after fifty washes, while another drops to UPF 15 before the end of its first season.

Polyester blocks more UV than nylon even before any finish is applied. A fabric rated UPF 50+ blocks at least 98% of incident UV. The aromatic benzene rings in polyethylene terephthalate absorb UV radiation in the 280-400 nm range and convert it into heat. Nylon's amide bonds have no aromatic absorption and let much of the UV-B radiation pass through. That single difference is why a 130 gsm plain-weave polyester fabric typically reaches UPF 30 with a standard finish, while a nylon fabric of the same construction measures around UPF 10 to 25 unless it is dyed in a deep shade or treated.
Cover factor and construction adjust that baseline. A high-cover fabric blocks more UV because fewer photons travel through the yarn intersections. Twill weaves, high warp and weft densities, and thicker deniers all reduce transmitted radiation, even without any chemical finish. For a buyer in the outdoor market, the practical rule is not to assign the UV requirement to the finish alone. To do that is to make an expensive finishing choice on a fiber that cannot hold the number.

A UV-cut finish can lift a standard fabric to UPF 50+, but the type of finish decides how long it holds. UV absorbers are organic molecules that convert UV radiation into heat. UV blockers are inorganic particles such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide that scatter and absorb the incoming light. UV stabilizers protect the polymer from photo-degradation but do not directly increase UPF. A production order may use all three at once, and each one changes hand feel, cost, and wash resistance.
On polyester, a low add-on of UV absorber can push UPF from 30 to 50+ without affecting the drape. On nylon, reaching the same number usually means adding a larger quantity of a UV blocker, which can stiffen the fabric and alter the touch. In many cases the better path is a combined system, or a denser fabric construction that reduces the blocking load placed on the finish.
Wash resistance is the critical variable. AATCC TM 183 and AS/NZS 4399 are usually run after 20 to 50 laundering cycles. Comparative tests on outdoor woven fabrics show a UV-cut finish losing 10 to 20% of its UPF after 30 washes when the cover factor is moderate, while fabrics with a very high cover factor retain nearly the full number. That is exactly why the starting construction matters more than the finishing chemistry.
Three checks to put in the UV protection spec before you order
First, write the UPF requirement after washing, not on the initial test. If the fabric is sold for fishing shirts, beach shirts, or hiking pants, specify a UPF 50+ result after 20 laundering cycles under AATCC TM 183. This single change removes the common gap between marketing claims and field performance.
Second, lock cover factor into the construction data. For woven outdoor fabrics, the relevant parameters are warp and weft density, weave type, yarn count, and air permeability. A 150 gsm plain weave with 18 picks per cm will not hold the same UPF as a 180 gsm twill with higher yarn density. Third, verify the stabilizer package on nylon. Nylon is more vulnerable to UV degradation than polyester. Without stabilizers, nylon loses strength and yellows faster when exposed to strong sunlight. A UV-cut finish on a non-stabilized nylon fabric may look fine at the lab stage and fail during field use. Ask the supplier for yarn-level stabilizer information before you commit to the finish.

For UV-heavy outdoor garments, polyester with a UV-cut finish is the safer default. It absorbs UV at the fiber level, holds UPF better after washing, and does not require a heavy block load to reach a high rating. Nylon can reach the same protection, but it needs a denser construction, a more aggressive finish, and a stabilizer package to stay strong over time.
